Energy conservation in Brunei should begin from schools PDF Print E-mail

Statistics from the Eelectrical Services Department show that the Ministry of Education’s average usage of electricity is 6,581,472k Wh a month, which costs $658,147.23.

The figure would tally to 78,977, 668k Wh or $7, 897, 766.80 for a year. A one per cent energy saving would equal to $78, 977 saved for a year.

This was highlighted by Dayang Marlina @ Diana binti Haji Japar, Project Officer of the Electrical Services Department during her presentation on ‘Energy Efficiency and Conservation in Government Buildings’ to principals and assistant principals of primary schools.

She also highlighted that “the average usage of electricity for the past five years has shown that 48 per cent for domestic houses, 25 per cent for commercial buildings, 17 per cent for government buildings and 10 per cent for the Oil and Gas Sector”.

Move to cut rise in fire accidents owing to electrical faults PDF Print E-mail

Brunei Darussalam has adopted 15 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards as part of the initiatives focused towards achieving electrical safety of household appliances.

The standards were adopted in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Energy yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Legislative Council Building in the capital.

The 15 IEC standards, according to Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud in a speech prior to the launch, are among the 94 IEC standards that have been identified by the Technical Committee on Electrical Standards (TECO Electrical) of the Energy Division, Prime Minister’s Office being adopted in the first phase of the programme. The remaining standards will be reviewed for adoption in phases.

Region's largest solar power project to go online in August PDF Print E-mail

Brunei is a step closer towards developing its first large scale solar power plant project ‘Tenaga Suria Brunei’, with the installation of photovoltaic panels  by the Minister of Energy at the Seria Power Station yesterday morning to promote the development of renewable energy and hence, saving the nation’s natural resources.

The Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud said that the ‘Tenaga Suria Brunei’ Project is the first of its kind in the country and will be the largest in Southeast Asia.

“This project will place Brunei Darussalam on the green map and record a milestone for the country’s efforts towards sustainability, “the minister said in his speech.

“The event is an important point in the history of power generation in  Brunei Darussalam that will signify the embrace of a green power revolution,” the minister said while nothing that solar power holds major potential for not only its renewable nature but also for its cleanliness.

Brunei aims to adport 94 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, a move to reduce the increasing number of fires in homes and buildings in Brunei as a result of electrical faults.

TheTechnical Committee (Electrical) or Teco (Electrical) identified the international standards, with the priority focusing on househ9old appliances and electrical safety.

The international electrical standards will be implemented on a mandatory basis from March 1, 2010 with a grace period of two years between 2010 and 2012.

Seria Power Station gets solar panels PDF Print E-mail

Brunei’s aspiration to use cleaner and renewable energy sources moved a step closer to fruition following the installation of solar panels at the Seria Power Station yesterday.

The Tenaga Suria Brunei solar energy project is set to generate some 1.344MWh of electricity per year and touted to be using the largest photovoltaic system of its kind in Southeast Asia. This new energy source calls for a new industry or better termed as “green jobs” and also requires new skills as it would diversify Brunei ‘s workforce and open spin-off opportunities, said Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad Haji Daud, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The project, funded by Mitsubishi Corporation, will involve running tests to six different types of photovoltaic (PV) panels to identify the type which would best suit the country’s climate, said the minister at the PV system installation ceremony yesterday.
