Energy Minister inspects power station PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 12 January 2010
The Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) yesterday conducted a working visit to the Bukit Panggal Power Station in Tutong District to inspect its operations.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud was briefed by Acting Head of Generation, Talib Sulaiman and toured building housing machines for the steam turbine and gas turbine, as well as the main control room of the power plant.

The Bukit Panggal Power Station is the first power plant under the Department of Electrical Services to use the “Combined Cycle” concept. It is hoped to function as the main generator for the department’s entire generation system.

Using the “Combined Cycle”, the level of energy output generated from this particular power station, which is at its first phase, is 116 megawatt (mw) with an efficiency of about 47 per cent. This is a significant difference compared to the efficiency level of the existing generators used by government and private sectors using the “Simple Concept” cycle which is around 26 per cent.

His Majesty’s Government has provided land measuring 140 acres at Bukit Panggal to cover the needs of the Bukit Panggal Generation System project with a long-term plan of reaching the maximum capacity of 500MW.

Although the power station has been operating since January 2008, it is not yet fully operational as only 75 acres have been developed to accommodate the first phase.

The “Combined Cycle” concept is expected to assist in reducing the country’s carbon emissions. This is made possible by using steam from the exhaust heat to generate extra electrical energy without using more fuel and gas. By using this concept, the exhaust heat, which is generally wasted, is turned into steam by mixing it with water via the steam turbine, which in turn operates the generator to generate additional electricity used to power areas within its scope.

The advanced control technology and operations of the Bukit Panggal station requires the assistance of foreign experts as technical advisers and trainers for the station’s technical staff. Accompanying the minister was Haji Ismail Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Haji Hashim, Deputy Permanent Secretary at PMO.
