Seria Power Station gets solar panels PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 26 January 2010
Brunei’s aspiration to use cleaner and renewable energy sources moved a step closer to fruition following the installation of solar panels at the Seria Power Station yesterday.

The Tenaga Suria Brunei solar energy project is set to generate some 1.344MWh of electricity per year and touted to be using the largest photovoltaic system of its kind in Southeast Asia. This new energy source calls for a new industry or better termed as “green jobs” and also requires new skills as it would diversify Brunei ‘s workforce and open spin-off opportunities, said Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad Haji Daud, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The project, funded by Mitsubishi Corporation, will involve running tests to six different types of photovoltaic (PV) panels to identify the type which would best suit the country’s climate, said the minister at the PV system installation ceremony yesterday.

He added that Bruneians would gain the technology know-how as well as getting all the necessary skills in running a solar power plant and its connection to the grid.

“Solar power holds much potential not only for its renewable nature but also for its cleanliness,” said the minister, adding that the demand for solar energy in industrialized countries was on the rise as it was deemed one of the most promising types of renewable energy.

Bruneians have been consuming energy from oil and gas at the cost of the environment, the minister noted.

Scientists have confirmed that the Earth’s temperature was warming and the rise of greenhouse gases generated by fossil fuel combustion has a great deal to do with the rise in temperature, he added.

“In Brunei, we have witnessed a changing weather pattern that could no longer be predicted,” said Pehin Dato Haji Mohammad. “In the last two years for instance, we have seen our weather turn more severe like never experienced before, and inevitably there will be more in store as our Earth gets warmer,” he added.

Brunei is set to save about 340,400 litres of crude oil and reduce about 940 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually once the solar power project starts generating electricity, according to a previous news report.

Also present during the installation ceremony were Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Dato Seri Eusoff Agaki Haji Ismail and Mitsubishi Corporation officials.
