Thursday, 11 February 2010 TheTechnical Committee (Electrical) or Teco (Electrical) identified the international standards, with the priority focusing on househ9old appliances and electrical safety. The international electrical standards will be implemented on a mandatory basis from March 1, 2010 with a grace period of two years between 2010 and 2012.Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (R) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud announced yesterday during the launch of the Brunei Darussalam Electrical Standards Book and official Teco (Electrical) website at the Legislative Council building. The minister stressed on the benefits of adopting the new international standards for increased safety. “I noted that in the past, some of the fire incidents in buildings and homes have been attributed to electrical faults such as overheating, overloading, short circuiting and loose connections,” observed the minister. “I personally place high priority on ensuring safety of electrical products and supply,” he said. He added that in 2007 and 2008,”34 per cent of fire outbreaks in homes and buildings were a result of electrical faults,” while it increased to 41 per cent last year. “Such tragic incidents can be reduced or even avoided altogether with the adoption, implementation, enforcement and compliance of these electrical standards,” said Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad. He said that Brunei will first adopt 15 of the electrical standards set by the IEC, while the remainder will be reviewed and adopted in following phases. He underscored the importance of electrical standards in the sultanate as it placed an emphasis on electrical safety. Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad said that the standards would also pay its part in raising public awareness and enhancing competency through training, ensuring the quality of electrical products and supply. The minister said that the adoption of the international standards would also be critical for Brunei in order to keep pace with new chances in industry and technology development. Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad added that the progress and development as a result of the adoption of the standards would be “in line with the international standards and practice to ensure the safe use of electricity and electrical products.” In line with the adoption of the international electrical standards, the Minister of Energy added that the implementation of the new cable colour code would take effect March 1, 2010 with a one year transition period.
