Deputy Minister (Energy) at PMO attended the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels and the 7th Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting (HEMM) in Osaka, Japan
Monday, 15 September 2025

Negara Brunei Darussalam, led by Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi Bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Deputy Minister (Energy) at Prime Minister’s Office, participated in the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels and the 7th Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting (HEMM) held on 15th September 2025 in Osaka, Japan.

In his remarks at the HEMM, Yang Mulia Dato, highlighted the potential of hydrogen in methanol and ammonia production, particularly in supporting carbon capture utilisation. He emphasised their strategic importance to Brunei’s Economic Blueprint, which prioritises downstream industries. Additionally, he noted hydrogen’s dual function in driving power sector decarbonisation while simultaneously sustaining and diversifying the downstream sector.

The Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels highlighted the sector’s strong growth potential — with demand projected to grow fourfold by 2035. This outlook is driven by the implementation of the IMO’s net zero framework, expected to accelerate the uptake of sustainable fuels in global shipping. Key challenges such as high costs, limited infrastructure, and the need for harmonised standards continue to shape the path forward for sustainable fuels.

The Ministerial Meetings were preceded with a bilateral meeting between the Deputy Minister (Energy) at PMO and Mr. Murase Yoshifumi, Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), METI Japan. During the bilateral meeting, both parties exchange insights on Japan’s 7th Strategic Energy Plan and Brunei Darussalam’s long-term energy policy direction.
