The Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government of Sarawak, Malaysia today signed and exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Energy Cooperation at the opening ceremony of the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Forum 4.0 (SAREF 4.0), held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
Present as the Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony was The Right Honourable Dato Seri Setia Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak.
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office, while the Government of Sarawak, Malaysia was represented by The Honourable Dato Haji Ibrahim bin Haji Baki, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS), Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak.
The MoU aims to enhance energy cooperation and serves as an overarching framework for future collaboration in oil and gas activities, power, energy transition and any other mutually agreed activities between Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak, Malaysia.
The on-going collaboration to broaden the scope of energy cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak was also reflected in the Joint Statement on the 26th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia (26th ALC) between His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and The Honorable Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia held on 27th August 2025 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
The signing and exchange of the MoU further emphasizes the energy sector as one of the important pillars of strategic cooperation and also reflects the joint commitment in strengthening sustainable development, energy security and regional connectivity.
