Special ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (Special AMEM) on the latest situation in the Middle East

Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office represented Brunei Darussalam at the Special ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (Special AMEM) on the latest situation in the Middle East, held virtually, on 27th April 2026.

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Jamra Petra bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Acting Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office as Brunei Darussalam’s Senior Official for Energy (SOE) Leader, and officials from the Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Chaired by Her Excellency Sharon S. Garin, Secretary of Energy of the Republic of the Philippines, this Special AMEM was convened to address  rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, focusing on its implications to the ASEAN member states’ energy security and the uncertainties in the global energy landscape that may affect market stability of oil and gas supplies, energy price volatility, and global supply chains. Through this meeting, the ASEAN Energy Ministers and representatives took the opportunity to exchange views, assess the implications for regional energy security, and identify collective measures to enhance ASEAN’s preparedness and resilience.

The Joint Statement of the Special ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting on the Latest Situation in the Middle East highlighted the need for urgent and coordinated regional action considering evolving geopolitical developments that affect energy markets and supply chains, particularly oil and gas, and also reaffirmed ASEAN’s collective responsibility to safeguard regional energy security through strengthened cooperation, including with Dialogue Partners, and timely policy responses. In addition, the Joint Statement also called for the expeditious completion of national processes towards ratification of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security (APSA), enhanced information sharing, and diversification of energy sources to ensure stable, sustainable, and resilient energy supplies.

Brunei Darussalam’s participation in the Meeting reflects the country’s steadfast commitment in contributing to  ASEAN regional cooperation, strengthening energy security, and promoting economic stability and the well-being of the people of the region amidst a rapidly evolving energy lansdcape.
